  • Basketball team: unity, victory(pg 195 for Molly's book?), McMurphy's revolution affects the doctor
  • McMurphy breaks glass again: McMurphy is getting to her, she's mad but not trying to show it
    • persistence of patients
    • symbol: interference of power, authority, "we're always being watched"
      • cardboard: authority can't control
    • every time it breaks, becomes a bigger deal
    • basketball (pg 208, pg 196 for Molly)- "make it well again", but she doesn't- throws it in garbage(symbol)
    • other patients are getting on board to agitate Nurse
      • and Doctor: oblivious, scared of Nurse too, McMurphy's power affects him too, on patients side (McMurphy and Dr friends- mental bond), both manipulated by Nurse Ratched: common enemy (unity)
  • Why does Nurse Ratched put up with all this?
    • She could use her power
    • If she sends him to disturbed, he becomes a martyr for patients
      • passive aggressive fighting
    • If she sent him away, he would've "won"
    • She is in control of him
    • PRIDE: doesn't want to give up
  • Men fishing: masculinity, strength
    • openly defies her
    • aunts=hookers
      • sketchy
  • Bromden's life: symbol of ward because government is trying to take away everything from the tribe, Nurse Ratched is trying to take everything from men
    • give up who are for money
    • culture to be destroyed by government 
      • "progress" is dam but giving up culture
      • Dad gives up because can't win
    • send letter to mother
      • mother betrays Dad
      • Father used to be big, mom grew bigger than him
        • POWER!!= physical size
  • Authority figures: women
    • Chief blames mother
    • not native american; she took her name
      • taking away of his identity
      • she has influence over Dad
      • sneaky, manipulation= using mom against tribe
    • Dad drinks himself to death- lost strength
    • $200,000 was a lot of money
  • "What can you pay for the way a man lives?..What Can you pay for what a man is?" (Kesey, Molly's page 208)
  • Native americans, black boys, women not respected- allegory of 1960s: disregarding of these people
    • combine
    • shedding light on outcasts
    • Kesey is not racist but showing what other people are like
      • saying that this society doesn't "feel that great"
  • What point is Kesey trying to make by having the authority figures women?
    • no women in power at this time
    • this is a possibility
    • men belittled by woman's power
      • weak men vs. strong women
    • time period: 1960s, women not respected
    • exposing STEREOTYPES

  • Broaden speaking
    • "Thank you"= first words
      • gum, but actually thank you for what McMurphy has done
    • reveals a lot about himself
    • Bromden confides in McMurphy
      • connection
      • treats him like a PERSON!!
        • not invisible
    • Bromden shows bravery
