Concrete Angel

"Concrete Angel" by Martina McBride

She walks to school with the lunch she packed
Nobody knows what she's holdin' back
Wearin' the same dress she wore yesterday
She hides the bruises with linen and lace

The teacher wonders but she doesn't ask
It's hard to see the pain behind the mask
Bearing the burden of a secret storm
Sometimes she wishes she was never born

Through the wind and the rain
She stands hard as a stone
In a world that she can't rise above
But her dreams give her wings
And she flies to a place where she's loved
Concrete angel

Somebody cries in the middle of the night
The neighbors hear, but they turn out the lights
A fragile soul caught in the hands of fate
When morning comes it'll be too late

Through the wind and the rain
She stands hard as a stone
In a world that she can't rise above
But her dreams give her wings
And she flies to a place where she's loved
Concrete angel

A statue stands in a shaded place
An angel girl with an upturned face
A name is written on a polished rock
A broken heart that the world forgot

I first heard this song about a year ago when I was listening to the radio. My mom was driving me to lacrosse and the lyrics brought her to tears. The song is about a little girl who is abused by her mother. Some people see telltale signs of abuse, but they disregard them. Towards the end, we see that she is killed by her mother and everyone forgets about her. This is probably one of, in not the most, depressing, heartbreaking songs I have ever heard. I reminded me that I have so much that I take for granted. Here this little girl is hiding bruises with the same dress everyday, while I'm worrying about what to wear. Her mother is beating her while I get in petty fights with my mom and am so mad at her.
I picked this song because I feel it evokes such strong emotion. I feel a whirl of emotions such as pity, grief, anguish, sorrow, and disgust. Most of my concerns go out to the little girl, but I feel hate for the mother that made the child's life filled with agony.
